💙 What happens next?
This estimate is a guide only. Your actual NDIS plan is determined through a planning meeting with the NDIA. To get the best outcome: gather evidence from your treating professionals, clearly describe how your disability affects your daily life, and consider working with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Support Coordinator to prepare for your planning meeting.
⚠️ Important disclaimer
NDIS funding amounts vary significantly based on individual circumstances, location, specific disability impacts and NDIA assessment. This calculator provides a broad estimate based on published NDIS pricing and typical plan amounts. Actual plans may be higher or lower. Always seek guidance from an NDIS planner, LAC or disability advocate.
Tips to get the most from your NDIS plan
📋
Prepare evidence before your planning meeting
Gather reports from all your treating professionals — GPs, specialists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists. The more detailed evidence you have about your functional impairment, the stronger your case for funding.
🎯
Focus on goals, not just diagnosis
NDIS funding is linked to your goals and what you want to achieve. Come to your planning meeting with clear, specific goals — "I want to live independently" or "I want to return to work" — not just a list of your limitations.
👩‍💼
Consider a Support Coordinator
A Support Coordinator can help you understand and implement your plan, find and connect with service providers, and ensure you're getting maximum value from your funding. Support Coordination can be funded in your NDIS plan.
💼
Use a Plan Manager
Plan management gives you more choice and control over your providers — you can use both registered and unregistered providers. Plan management fees are paid by the NDIS on top of your plan, not from your budget.
🔄
Review your plan regularly
If your needs change significantly you can request an early plan review. Don't wait until your scheduled review if you're not getting enough support — contact the NDIA or your LAC to discuss a plan review.
📞
Get help from a disability advocate
Disability advocacy services can support you through the NDIS process for free. They can help you prepare for planning meetings, review decisions and navigate appeals. Contact Disability Advocacy Network Australia (DANA) to find a local advocate.
Frequently asked questions
How is NDIS funding calculated?
NDIS funding is not calculated on a fixed formula — it is determined by the NDIA based on what is "reasonable and necessary" for each individual. Factors include the nature and impact of your disability, your support needs, your goals, and your informal support network. Published NDIS pricing guides set maximum rates for different support types.
What are the three budget categories in an NDIS plan?
Core Supports fund everyday activities like personal care, domestic assistance and community participation. Capacity Building Supports fund therapies, skills development and employment support to build your independence. Capital Supports fund assistive technology, equipment and home modifications that are one-off or high-cost items.
How long does it take to get an NDIS plan?
The NDIS access and planning process typically takes 3-6 months from initial application to approved plan. This includes the access request, eligibility decision, and planning meeting. Having strong supporting evidence from treating professionals can help speed up the process.
Can I appeal my NDIS plan if I think the funding is too low?
Yes — you have the right to request an internal review of any NDIA decision within 3 months. If you disagree with the review outcome, you can appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). A disability advocate can support you through this process at no cost.
Does the NDIS cover mental health conditions?
Yes — psychosocial disabilities (including mental health conditions) can be funded by the NDIS if they are permanent and significantly affect daily functioning. You will need supporting evidence from a psychiatrist or mental health professional. Note that some mental health services are funded by mainstream health rather than the NDIS.
